A new dimension for bathrooms

No longer are bathrooms simply 'functional' spaces for dealing with personal hygiene. They are now extensions of everyday living space where you can continue to watch tv or listen to your favourite CD whilst soaking up the pleasures of, maybe, a spa bath or a power shower.

As Yvonne Orgill, commercial director of the Bathroom Manufacturers Association, explains: "It is now an important haven for members of the family to relax and enjoy a little self-indulgence - though not all at the same time!

"Even the smallest bathroom is seen as no obstacle for a touch of opulence. Indeed, there are several manufacturers offering smart solutions to suit even the tightest area, incorporating many of the bathroom products you most desire. For instance, recent innovations in the showering market include multi-functional shower cabinets, with multi jets that offer all over body massage. And some even incorporate steam cabinets."

So, bathroom design is changing dramatically, probably more so than any other part of the house partly because of new technologies that save energy and water. But like the other rooms in your home, its style, colour and appearance will, inevitably, be down to your own personal taste.

Long gone are the days of "any shape and colour you like just so long as it's British Standard white." However, if you are going for a totally new bathroom it is important that it's designed as an entity, preferably by a professional, who will be able to put every last penny of your budget to maximum use.

With your input, he/she will take full advantage of the space available by introducing exactly the right balance of bath, shower, storage units, flooring, tiling, lighting, heating, mirrors plus all the accessories.

There are so many permutations for today's bathroom and professional designers should have them all at their fingertips. For instance there are special baths incorporating moveable showerheads plus hydro-massage jets. And see-through glass wash basins so you can check your athletes foot while washing your face.

There are toilets that will fit into a corner and shower cubicles to suit virtually any circumstances. In fact several major bathroom manufacturers now offer ranges designed especially to solve most space restrictions economically and efficiently.
