A home at Hamsterley Mill, Co Durham, had the old shingles replaced by a significant technical challenge whilst maintaining a ‘smooth’ curve to the roof. All shingles on the roof’s curved section required individual shouldering.

There were other technical problems to resolve. Not least of all concerned the two large dormers to the back and front of the house.. The origional design required the shingles to be fitted tight up to the cills of the dormer windows.

The Wensley technical team’s solution was to stop the shingle short and then use traditional leading between the underside of the cill to create a watertight seal. The leading was finished with a bitumen paint to prevent a reaction between the lead and the shingles.

Judges’ comments: This provided a comprehensive solution to an otherwise tricky renewal solution using shingles and shakes, compared to traditional materials. A high level of technical competence and installation skill was essential maintain the beauty and continuity of the curved roof. Infact, it when beyond simply replacing the roof because weather performance and visual appeal suggestions were made to the client.
